The Nuts and Bolts of Colourful Friday

Our brief from Robyn for todays Colourful Friday was to investigate hexagons in any colour.

Took some thinking for this one but then I came up with these. Some old and some newer but all with a job to do.

I'm looking forward to visiting all the colourful posts to see what sort of 'hexagons' everyone has found.

All my 'Brutus' blocks have been stitched and with pencil and paper I auditioned some layouts. I decided to stitch two 'fillers' to make a couple of blocks a little bigger.

Now that I have all the blocks sashed, I'd like to add a second sashing. There's a sort of avocado green in the floral fabric that I thought I might try and match ... or I was wondering if I should go with a cream ... or should I be looking at a darker colour?

I would very much appreciation your thoughts and ideas on sashing colours. While I'm in 'indecision' mode ... do you prefer to stitch and then sew sashings etc or do you sew first and stitch second?

Thankyou for visiting :)

Hello Narelle,

Clever combination of hexies. Brutus has come together so well. I would put on a slightly darker border not to dark you want the blocks to shine.
Happy days.

You were clever to think of the nuts and bolts. I agree with Bev that the sashings should be darker. Probably green or pink or brown. Whichever one brings out the thread in the stitchery. The blocks are gorgeous and the fillers match in well.

I will go with the others that a darker sashing will frame the blocks better, though I do like the light too it does get a little lost.
I always like to stitch first as I don't like the sewing part much. Stitching is my favourite part.

Very clever with the hexagons - what a great challenge to make you "think outside the square". Love that about photography. I'm going with darker, too for sashings. Once again, not too dark - love the stitching. Take care.

I love what you did with Brutus. The blocks look great. I've tried both ways of stitching & i prefer to stitch first. I find if i sew sashings on & then stitch then the embroidery draws the blocks in so they are smaller than they should be. I think a slightly darker colour You lovely gift arrived today. Thankyou for it. I will be putting it to go use. :) Happy Stitching,

Love the nuts and bolts and went "aaaargh, now why did I not think of that" when I saw them :)
The quilt is lovely. Personally I would do a small border of a darker color then a larger outer border.

Hi Narelle. I have been out of action with a few weeks of being busy, and I am now enjoying catching up on all the posts I have missed. Great to see all the fun with Colourful Fridays, but I have been keen to see your blocks come together for your Brutus Quilt. Love the stitching and the quilt looks wonderful. Love the way it is turning out.

The green sashing is a great choice. For mine, I would finished it with a bold pink-close to the color of the flowers.

I think the avocado color would be a good choice since it will be both darker and still relate to the first sashing fabric.

The green would probably be a nice off set to the pink in the stitching & the sashing fabric.

Good luck with your decision.

I would definitely stitch first on a block cut a bit larger than the end size - then trim and then sew - teh square of stitchery cna shrink a little and the sewn on bit can fray too much.
